GSM Fabric Weight Explained: What 70–322 GSM Means for Your Sewing (and Why Our Velvet Runs 240 GSM)

You found the perfect velvet. The colour is right, the price is fair — and then the listing says "240 GSM." What does that number actually mean for the dress you're planning?

GSM is the single most useful spec on a fabric listing, and the one most buyers skim past. This guide explains it in plain terms, shows a real weight spectrum built from fabrics we actually stock (23 GSM all the way to 322 GSM), and uses velvet — the fabric trending hardest for AW26 — as the running example.

What GSM actually means

GSM = grams per square meter. It is the weight of a 1 m × 1 m square of the fabric. Nothing more.

  • A fabric listed at 70 GSM means one square metre weighs 70 grams — light, airy, probably sheer.
  • A fabric at 322 GSM means that same square metre weighs 322 grams — dense, structured, probably opaque.

In the US you'll also see oz/yd² (ounces per square yard). The conversion is simple: 1 oz/yd² ≈ 33.9 GSM. So an 8 oz canvas (≈ 271 GSM) and our Heavy Cotton Canvas 8oz are the same weight class. (prinstitch.com)

GSM is not thickness. A loosely-woven thick fabric can have a low GSM; a tightly-woven thin one can have a high GSM. But as a first indicator of how a fabric will drape, breathe, and hold shape, it's the number to learn. (fabzure.com)

Velvet, worked through

Velvet is the fabric of AW26 — crushed velvet is back on the runways (NYFW FW26 sent gold crushed-velvet gowns down the floor, and "velvet underground" was one of the five defining trends), and buyers are being told to watch fabric weight specifically: a heavier velvet reads more opulent, a lighter one suits casual pieces. So what does our 240 GSM Stretch Velvet tell you?

  • At 240 GSM it sits in the mid band — heavy enough to drape like evening wear and hold a structured skirt, light enough to move with the body. That's why it works for both dresses and stage curtains (the listing's two named uses).
  • It's a stretch velvet, so the 240 GSM includes spandex recovery — it'll feel lighter on the body than a 240 GSM woven.
  • Compare it to our 8-Wale Corduroy at 225 GSM (the listing literally calls it "Polyester Velvet Ribbed" — same weight neighbourhood, ribbed instead of piled) and the 270 GSM Velvet Teddy Fleece (plush, coat/home-decor weight).

The takeaway: when a velvet listing just says "velvet," ask for the GSM. 200 vs 350 GSM is the difference between a blouse and a bench cushion.

How to pick GSM for your project

  • Lining / sheer overlay → ≤ 100 GSM (the sequin tulle at 23 GSM, the cotton lining at 65 GSM)
  • Summer dress / blouse → 100–150 GSM (poplin 130, crinkle cotton 135)
  • Structured dress / trousers / apparel velvet → 150–250 GSM (our stretch velvet at 240 is the sweet spot)
  • Jacket / upholstery / bag → 250–350+ GSM (twill 270, denim 300–322)

One caveat from the trade press: GSM is a great starting point, not the whole story. Fibre, weave, and finish change the hand-feel — a 180 GSM cotton jersey and a 180 GSM polyester knit feel nothing alike. (minmaxst.com) Always order a swatch if the project is make-or-break.
