Jacquard Fabric Types Explained: 5 Families and What to Sew With Each

Jacquard isn't one fabric — it's a weaving method. The pattern is built into the cloth on a Jacquard loom, not printed on top. That's why a jacquard holds its motif after fifty washes while a print fades.

But "jacquard" covers everything from an $11 airy cotton to a $47 metallic evening-weight. Buying by the word alone is how projects go wrong. Here's the map of all 45 jacquards we currently stock, split into the 5 families that actually behave differently at the sewing machine.

Why jacquard, why now: Intertextile Directions has named tapestry-inspired jacquards and patinated brocades as core A/W 27-28 directions, while their A/W 26-27 forum listed "jacquards that push the limit of beauty" alongside classic tweed. On the interiors side, Mobus Fabrics reports modern jacquard shifting toward geometric, architectural constructions. The texture-over-print movement is real across both apparel and home.

Family 1 — Cotton Jacquard (15 in stock, $11.20–$20.83)

Cotton Swiss dot jacquard fabric by the yard

The everyday entry point. Woven texture on a breathable cotton base — the motif is subtle, tonal, and reads as "quality" rather than "statement."

Sew it into: shirts, summer dresses, kids' clothes, curtains, pillow covers.

Handling: behaves like a mid-weight quilting cotton. No special needle, no lining needed.

  • [Cotton Swiss Dot Jacquard Fabric](/products/cotton-swiss-dot-jacquard-apparel-craft-fabric) — $12.60, the safest first jacquard
  • [Embossed Grid Jacquard Cotton Fabric](/products/embossed-grid-jacquard-cotton-fabric) — $14.28, breathable floral texture
  • [Lightweight Stripe Seersucker Jacquard](/products/stripe-seersucker-jacquard-cotton-fabric) — $11.20, lightest in the family
  • [Heavyweight Paisley Floral Jacquard](/products/heavyweight-paisley-floral-jacquard-fabric) — $14.00, thick enough for structured bags

Family 2 — Brocade & Damask (6 in stock, $12.50–$39.20)

Embossed damask jacquard fabric by the yard

The ornate end. Raised, often multi-colour motifs with a visible float on the face — historically silver/gold thread, now widely in polyester and blends.

Quick definitions people get wrong:

  • Brocade — extra weft threads create a raised, embroidery-like motif. Reverse side shows floats.
  • Damask — reversible, single-warp, matte-vs-shine contrast. Flatter than brocade.
  • Jacquard — the umbrella term. Both of the above are jacquards.

Sew it into: structured jackets, waistcoats, evening bodices, costume, cushion fronts.

Handling: interface it. Brocade frays fast — finish every seam.

  • [Embossed Damask Jacquard Fabric](/products/embossed-damask-jacquard-fabric) — $39.20, the heaviest drape
  • [French Palace Jacquard Fabric](/products/french-palace-jacquard-fabric) — $16.80, best value in the family
  • [Antique Gold Floral Jacquard Brocade](/products/purple-gold-floral-jacquard-brocade-fabric) — $12.60, cheapest way into real brocade
  • [Floral Brocade Jacquard Fabric](/products/yellow-floral-brocade-jacquard-apparel-fabric) — $18.20

Family 3 — Metallic Jacquard (6 in stock, $11.11–$47.22)

Gold metallic yarn jacquard fabric by the yard

Metallic yarn woven into the structure — not foil-printed on top, so the shine survives washing. This is the family that maps directly onto the A/W "dramatic luxury" direction.

Sew it into: occasion dresses, statement jackets, stage and cosplay, holiday table runners.

Handling: metallic yarn is abrasive — change your needle after each project. Press on low with a cloth.

  • [Foil Jacquard Polyester Knit Fabric](/products/foil-jacquard-polyester-knit-fabric-dress-skirt-by-the-yard) — $11.11, stretch + shine, entry price
  • [3D Floral Metallic Jacquard](/products/3d-floral-metallic-jacquard-fabric) — $37.50, dimensional florals
  • [Gold Metallic Yarn Jacquard](/products/gold-metallic-yarn-jacquard-fabric) — $40.28
  • [Crinkle Metallic Jacquard](/products/crinkle-metallic-jacquard-fabric) — $47.22, the most textural

Family 4 — Denim Jacquard (4 in stock, $15.00–$22.40)

Checkerboard jacquard denim fabric by the yard

Woven geometric patterning on a washed denim base. This is the sleeper category — it delivers the checker / retro geometric motif Intertextile flagged, on a fabric home sewers already know how to handle.

Sew it into: jackets, wide-leg trousers, tote bags, overshirts.

Handling: denim needle (90/14), longer stitch length. Pre-wash — these are washed-finish fabrics.

  • [Checkerboard Jacquard Denim Fabric](/products/checkerboard-jacquard-cotton-denim-thick-fabric) — $19.60
  • [Checkerboard Lattice Fringe Jacquard Denim](/products/checkerboard-lattice-fringe-jacquard-denim-fabric) — $19.60, fringed selvedge detail
  • [Star Print Rhombus Jacquard Denim](/products/star-print-rhombus-jacquard-washed-denim-fabric) — $22.40
  • [Jacquard Washed Denim Fabric](/products/heavy-weight-jacquard-washed-denim-fabric) — $15.00, heaviest weight

Family 5 — Knit & Mesh Jacquard (3 in stock, $11.11–$19.60)

Cable knit chain jacquard fabric by the yard

Jacquard patterning on a knit or mesh base — so you get the motif plus stretch. The only family here you can sew into a fitted garment without darts.

Sew it into: fitted dresses, skirts, layering tops, sheer overlays.

Handling: ballpoint / stretch needle, zigzag or overlock. Do not press hard — knit jacquard flattens.

  • [Solid Color Cable Knit Chain Jacquard](/products/cable-knit-chain-jacquard-apparel-fabric) — $19.60, cable-knit look without knitting
  • [Embroidered Cotton Pointelle Knit](/products/embroidered-cotton-pointelle-stripe-knit-fabric) — $18.20
  • [Spiderweb Jacquard Polyester Mesh](/products/spiderweb-jacquard-mesh-fabric) — $11.11, two-tone sheer

The decision table

If you're sewing… Choose Why From
A first jacquard project Cotton Jacquard Behaves like quilting cotton $11.20
A structured jacket / waistcoat Brocade & Damask Holds a sharp edge $12.50
An occasion / stage piece Metallic Jacquard Woven-in shine, washes safely $11.11
Trousers, jackets, bags Denim Jacquard Pattern + real denim durability $15.00
Anything fitted Knit & Mesh Jacquard Only family with stretch $11.11
Curtains & cushions Cotton or Brocade Tonal texture / ornate motif $11.20

Buying notes

1. Check the reverse before you cut. Brocade's reverse has loose floats that snag; damask is reversible and gives you two faces from one cut.

2. Motif scale vs pattern piece. A large tapestry motif on a small bodice loses the pattern completely. Match motif repeat to your largest pattern piece.

3. Buy 15% extra for pattern matching. Jacquards have a repeat. Unlike a solid, you can't nest pieces freely.

4. Fray test the swatch. Metallic and brocade jacquards fray fastest — plan for French seams or an overlocker.

FAQ

Is jacquard fabric good for dresses? Yes — but pick the family by silhouette. Fitted → knit jacquard (stretch). Structured or A-line → cotton or brocade. Evening → metallic.

What's the difference between jacquard and brocade? Jacquard is the weaving method; brocade is one type of jacquard with raised supplementary-weft motifs. All brocade is jacquard, not all jacquard is brocade.

Does jacquard fabric shrink? Cotton-based jacquards shrink 3–5% on first wash. Pre-wash. Polyester and metallic jacquards are stable.

Can I use jacquard for upholstery? The heavyweight cotton and brocade families work for cushions and light-use seating. For high-traffic furniture you want a rated upholstery weight — our heaviest here is the [Heavyweight Paisley Floral Jacquard](/products/heavyweight-paisley-floral-jacquard-fabric).
