Jacquard Pattern Scale: The One Spec Line First Orders Skip
Share
A floral jacquard looks like one thing in a listing thumbnail and another on the cutting table. The gap between those two is where small first orders lose money — and almost nobody writes the line that closes it.
This week we walked the W3 question — how big is the motif, and what can you cut from it — across weight, sewing, sourcing and reading the cloth. The takeaway is a single sentence for your sampling sheet: "Motif scale — small / medium / large, and repeats per yard."
Why scale, not color, decides the garment
When a buyer writes "floral jacquard" on a request, they have usually picked the color and the price. They have not picked the scale. Our jacquard constructions span 96 live styles from $5.73 to $44.44 a yard, but the variable that decides whether a dress works is how large the bloom is and how many times it repeats across the width.
| Scale | What it reads as | Best cut from it | Worst cut from it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small all-over repeat | Quiet, continuous texture | Coats, sleeves, linings | A single statement panel (gets lost) |
| Medium floral | Special but wearable | Whole bodices, tote bags, cushions | Nothing — it is the safe default |
| Large painterly bloom | One statement element | Skirt panels, occasion gowns | Narrow sleeves (motif fights the piece) |
Read it off the swatch, not the screen
A large bloom can look "busy" on a phone and "rich" on a 57-inch cloth in daylight. Decide the scale from a physical swatch. You can buy 1 yard first as a sample, so the cost of getting the scale right is one yard — not one order.
The embossed floral jacquard shown as the cover is a large-scale statement jacquard — one bloom per panel, woven not printed. See the full range in the jacquard collection.
The bouquet cotton is the medium scale — enough bloom to feel special, small enough for a whole bodice. A cotton jacquard like this is the easiest scale to start a first run with.
The Baoxiang jacquard shows how a large motif behaves on a 59-inch width — the repeat is the spec, not the color.
Next week we move from what the cloth is to where it comes from: W4 Origin & Sourcing — why Keqiao direct sourcing lets you buy by the yard at all.
