From Artwork to a Yard of Cloth — What a Satin Strike-Off Actually Checks
Share
A strike-off is the cheapest insurance you buy
You send a design. The mill prints 1 yard. You see the cloth in your hand before a full bolt is cut. That one-yard sample is called a strike-off, and it is the step most first-time custom prints skip — then regret.
A screen photo flattens everything. It hides the drag of the cloth, the way a colour shifts under a window, and whether a panel will need a seam you did not plan for. A strike-off shows those things on a real length of cloth.
The four checks a strike-off pays for
Most makers look at the colour first. The checks that actually protect a project are the ones a photo cannot show:
- Colour match. Hold the strike-off next to your artwork in daylight, not under a shop light. A small shift at the mill becomes a big shift across a garment.
- The hand. Turn the cloth over and feel the reverse. A charmeuse satin and a jacquard satin can read as the same word in a listing, yet one drapes close to the body and the other holds a structured line.
- The width. A wider cloth gives you a larger panel per yard and fewer seams. Two strike-offs that look alike in a thumbnail can differ by inches of usable width.
- The colour count. A line carried in many colourways is a different production commitment than a single run. More colourways usually means a higher base, and that base is what your per-yard quote is built on.
None of these is "the fibre is premium." They are choices made before the cloth is ever cut.
Three satins that read alike, behave apart
Real examples from the shop, all called satin, all priced per yard:
| Satin | Price per yard | What it is built for |
|---|---|---|
| Charmeuse satin (10 colourways) | $8.33 | Gowns & linings — drapes close to the body |
| Satin for evening wear & linings (16 colourways) | $11.11 | Linings & evening wear — steady edge, clean fall |
| Four Gentlemen satin jacquard (10 colourways, 47 in) | $13.89 | Hanfu & home decor — structured line, two-way stretch |
The cheapest and the most expensive in that table share the word satin and little else about how they behave. The $13.89 jacquard earns its place from structure and a raised surface. The $8.33 charmeuse earns its place from a clean, close drape.
How to read your own strike-off
Order 1 yard and run the four checks above before you approve a bolt. If two quotes share the same fibre but sit far apart, the fibre is not what you are paying for — you are paying for width, hand, and colour count.
A sample strike-off of satin printed from your own artwork typically lands at your bench in about nine working days, which is fast enough to test a motif before a season closes. The point is not the speed. The point is that you see the cloth before the bolt is cut.
Shop the satin line
Browse the full range of satin by the yard, from clean solids to raised brocade:
- Charmeuse satin fabric — 10 colourways, 59 inches
- Satin for evening wear & linings — 16 colourways, 59 inches
- Four Gentlemen satin jacquard — 10 colourways, 47 inches
- The satin collection — every drape and colourway we carry
Buy one yard first. Satin reads richer in the hand than on a screen, and a single yard tells you whether the weight and the colour are right before you commit to a bolt.
