How to Sew Metallic Fabrics (without the drama)
- Lurex / metallic knit: the metallic thread snags easily. Use a new universal or ballpoint needle (70/10–80/12), lengthen the stitch slightly, and don't pull — let the feed do the work. A walking foot helps.
- Metallic jacquard: denser and stiffer. Switch to a 90/14 jeans needle, and use a Teflon / roller foot so the coating doesn't stick or leave shine marks from presser-foot pressure.
- Foil: the coating is heat-sensitive. Press on the reverse with a press cloth, low heat, no steam. Too much heat = the foil cracks or transfers.
- Seams: a microtex needle gives cleaner holes in coated fabrics; finish seams with a zigzag or serger so the metallic layer doesn't fray at the edge.
Care: Keep the Shine
Metallic coatings hate heat and abrasion. Wash inside out, in a mesh bag, cold, gentle cycle. No tumble dry. Lay flat to dry. Done right, lurex and metallic jacquard keep their glow for years — which is the whole point of "quiet luxury" you can actually wear.
