Woven or Printed? Why Your Jacquard Quote Comes Back 8x Apart
Fall 2026 is putting florals back into the cloth. Vogue Arabia's September issue frames brocade and jacquard as the "heirloom" story, and Apparel Resources is blunt about it: this season's florals show up "woven directly into the fabric rather than printed onto it." For anyone buying fabric, that means one photo of a floral can hide two completely different cost structures — and the quote sheet will not flag it for you.
A true jacquard builds the pattern on a Jacquard loom using supplementary weft threads. A "jacquard-look" print lays the same flower onto finished cloth with pigment. They photograph the same. Cut them open and wear them, and they part ways fast.
Why the quote can differ 8x
In Keqiao the two quotes are priced in different units:
- Woven jacquard is priced on loom time plus supplementary weft. Denser pattern, more colors, longer loom occupancy, higher unit price.
- Printed floral is priced on ink plus print-press time. The flower costs about the same whether it lands on polyester or cotton; the base cloth drives most of the difference.
So when two "identical-looking" florals come back at $5.73 a yard and $44.44 a yard, the gap is usually the loom, not a brand markup.
A comparison table for small brands
| Dimension | Woven jacquard | Printed floral |
|---|---|---|
| How the pattern forms | Woven into the cloth (supplementary weft) | Pigment printed onto the base cloth |
| Structure | Has body, holds a cut edge | Rides on the base cloth, softer |
| Jackets / structured pieces | Strong — stands without lining | Weak — needs interlining for shape |
| Wear / after washing | Pattern lives as long as the cloth | Can crack or fade over many washes |
| Quoted on | Loom time + weft | Ink + press time |
| Choose it when | Coats, cushion fronts, anything needing dimension | Skirts, shells, flat floral only |
Three questions to ask the supplier when you read a quote
1. Is the pattern woven or printed? (woven or printed)
2. Which loom / which print method? (loom type / print method)
3. Can I buy 1 yard of each to compare the hand-feel?
We sell jacquard by the yard with 88 constructions live, from $5.73 to $44.44 a yard — so your first sample is one yard, not a container. Testing one before the bulk order beats trusting a photo.
