How to Read Jacquard Pattern Scale by Eye (and Pick the Right One for Your Project)
Two jacquards can show the same flower and still belong to completely different projects. The difference is the motif scale — the size of the repeat the loom builds — and the product photo almost never tells you what it is.
Why scale is the number that matters
Color is what you notice first, but scale is what decides whether a cut works. A small dobby or dot repeats every couple of inches, so it bends around a sleeve and cuts on the bias without a fight. A large all-over floral needs a coat, a curtain, or an upholstered panel to show its scale — and it forces you to match the repeat at every seam.

Read the scale before you buy
Lay the fabric flat and measure one full motif from where it starts to where it repeats. Then match that repeat to the smallest piece in your pattern.
- Small scale (under about 1 inch repeat): blouses, bias cuts, lined skirts, quilting. Reads as texture from a distance.
- Medium scale (about 1–3 inch repeat): dresses, structured tops, tote bags, lightweight curtains.
- Large scale (over about 3 inch repeat): coats, floor-length curtains, cushions, upholstery. Needs big panels to show.
A repeat that looks small on a screen often reads large on a cuff. The only way to know is to see it at cutting-table scale.
