Sewing notes nobody puts on the bolt
1. Jacquard has a right and wrong side. The pattern is raised and colored on the face; the back is flatter and often muddy. Mark the face with a safety pin before you cut — mixing them up is the most common jacquard mistake.
2. Match the motif at seams. Floral and brocade jacquards show misalignment instantly. Walk the pattern piece along the repeat before cutting so the bloom continues across a center front or a sleeve seam.
3. Finish the edge — jacquard frays on the bias. Use a French seam, bound edge, or zigzag. The woven structure loosens at a raw cut more than a plain weave does.
4. Press on the back, low heat, with a press cloth. The raised pattern crushes flat under a hot iron and won't spring back. Steam from the wrong side.
5. Metallic wefts are delicate. A jacquard with Lurex or foil thread wants a gentle cycle and no harsh bleach, or the shine dulls.
6. Test your needle. A sharp universal 80/12 handles most; very dimensional jacquards prefer a 90/14 to clear the raised floats without skipping.
